How can you become a contestant on the world series of poker?

I have recently become interested in the world series of poker and I have been watching the competitions on ESPN. I am new to the game of poker yet I feel that I have a lot of skill reading people and I think I could be very good at the game. I would like to know what it takes to become a poker champion and get a seat on that table. I understand that having a great deal of skill in poker is necessary. However, I have many other questions. How do I go about getting sponsored? Do I need to be wealthy to begin playing? (The stakes involve millions of dollars and I am in no way shape or form a millionaire so I am wondering if these guys are playing with their own money or where the money comes from.) Is there some sort of degree or background history which better qualifies you? What exactly does it take and how exactly do these people become so famous for playing poker?

to get to the WSOP main event itself: first be 21. second have $10,000 for the buy-in. if you dont have 10k you can always win a qualifying satellite. go to wsop.com and they should have a list of qualifying satellites. pokerstars and fulltilt should also have information on qualifying.

the basics to being good at poker: never stop practicing your game. to be good and win you have to play a lot of poker hands. home games, tournaments, online, atlantic city, vegas, etc are all good ways to practice. also, just watching and reading about poker can improve your game. knowing how to calculate (almost-exact) percentages of winning hands is important. there are many books around on poker from many respected pros. knowing bet amounts and what they mean, how to bluff, when to bluff and when to fold are all important skills that come with learning poker. and the last, maybe most important thing, about getting success at the WSOP, is getting LUCKY. if you watched the main event you must have seen Darvin Moon. he has more skill than he will admit but anyone can be good with pocket k-k or a-a every time.
